PRESERVING YOUR FAMILY TREASURES AT HOME
Elisabeth Jimenez
Family photographs, home movies, scrapbooks, and heirlooms provide lots of joy. As they get older, it is essential that they be cared for properly to prevent damage or loss. To complicate matters, many store-bought photo albums, storage boxes and display products are made from materials which can actually harm these priceless objects. This is a tutorial on best practices for preserving your family collections at home. We will discuss strategies for providing the best possible environment for your keepsakes and using the best possible storage materials to ensure their longevity. There will be a focus on photographs, paper documents, and computer files, but there will be time to discuss other kinds of artifacts as desired.
Elisabeth Jimenez has been the Archivist for the Sarasota County History Center since May 2023. She holds a B.A. in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the University of Central Florida and an M.S. in Library and Information Sciences from Florida State University. As the archivist, Elisabeth mainly processes collections at the Sarasota County History Center and ensures they meet industry standards in preservation. However, equally important, she ensures the information is accessible to the public. Elisabeth's biggest project on the horizon is working with the rest of the staff at the History Center to prepare the entire repository for transition to our new History Center building, currently under construction, which will be ready in early 2027. It will be no easy feat, but the History Center staff are incredibly excited to have a bigger space in which to offer more programs, a reference library, a larger digitization lab, exhibits, and more!.
