THE LONG HISTORY OF TAMPA BAY
Dr. Evan Bennett
Tampa Bay is not especially old, but its human history is. In this lecture, Dr. Evan Bennett will discuss how people adjusted their lives to live around the Tampa Bay estuary since its formation roughly 2,000 years ago. Connecting prehistory to the present, the lecture will discuss how people have reshaped the bay over time and what this has meant for both people and nature.
Evan P. Bennett is professor of history at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He is the author of Tampa Bay: The Story of an Estuary and Its People (University Press of Florida, 2024), which was awarded the Silver Medal in Florida Nonfiction from the Florida Book Awards and the Stetson Kennedy Prize from the Florida Historical Society. He is currently working on a book on Florida's agricultural history.
